Chew Kim Kiat: Growing with Every Journey

Each morning, as more than 1,200 students begin their journey to the Canadian International School, Chew Kim Kiat is already at work behind the scenes — making sure every route runs safely, smoothly, and on time.

As a Senior Executive (Operations) at ComfortDelGro Bus, our charter bus business, Kim Kiat manages a complex network of bus captains, attendants, and subcontractors. But he doesn’t see his role as simply overseeing operations — he sees it as being responsible for every journey, every student, every day.

For Kim Kiat, growth has never been about gaining titles or recognition. It is about staying agile and stepping forward even when it is not your job. This commitment to going the extra mile saw him nominated as a finalist for Passion! Award 2025.

Going Beyond the Role

Beyond his supervisory role, Kim Kiat obtained his Class 3 Bus Driver Vocational Licence so he could step in as a standby bus captain when needed. When unexpected situations arise, he doesn’t wait for a solution — he becomes part of it.

His actions have steadily influenced those around him. Colleagues look to him not just for direction, but also emulate his willingness to step outside his scope and take ownership.

Collaboration is at the heart of how he leads. When challenges such as student behaviour arise — such as students refusing to remain seated, moving around the bus while it is in motion, or continuing to be disruptive despite reminders — Kim Kiat brings people together. He listens to bus captains and attendants and works closely with them to find practical solutions, such as adjusting seating arrangements or having the student sit next to the bus attendant.

By giving frontline staff a voice, accountability is shared and issues are often resolved early. Where needed, matters are addressed calmly through closer supervision and follow‑up communication with schools and parents, ensuring consistency and safety for all.

Earning the Trust of Stakeholders

The same approach extends to his engagement with schools and parents. Through regular communication and proactive problem-solving, he builds trust and confidence — reflected in the many commendations he has received.

For Kim Kiat, growth is not a single milestone. It is a daily commitment — to learn, to support others, and to take responsibility for better outcomes.

At ComfortDelGro, his story is a reminder that true growth happens not in moments of recognition, but in the decision to step up — one safe journey at a time.
