Wu Qiong: Driving with Heart, Growing with Purpose

In the bustling streets of Chengdu, more than just a mode of transport, Wu Qiong’s taxi is a moving classroom and a culture exchange hub.

A taxi driver in Chengdu ComfortDelGro Taxi, China, Wu Qiong has spent over a decade navigating the city’s roads. More than just clocking miles, she always focuses on something deeper – learning something new every day, while helping others grow along the way.

三人行必有我师 is a saying from Confucius that translates to “If I am in a group of three people, there must be one from whom I can learn valuable knowledge or experience.” In this job, you meet all kinds of people. From them, there is always something to learn – about patience, service, or life itself.

Community is vital for taxi drivers, where individuals often face long hours and unpredictable passengers. Wu Qiong sees it as a shared responsibility to lift her fellow drivers up, and actively mentors new drivers by teaching them the ropes – from laws and passenger etiquette to how to highlight Chengdu’s best attractions.

A Passion for Service

Her goal? To turn every ride into an experience worth remembering, and a story worth retelling.

I tell the new drivers to treat each trip as more than just a job. A warm welcome, a clean car, a smile – these little things matter.

Her passion for service shines brightest in the moments of human connection. During Spring Festival, she encountered a visiting mother and her two children from Shanghai.

What started as a single trip turned into a four-day personalised tour when the mother asked Wu Qiong to be their personal driver for the entire trip. After accepting a stipulated amount, Wu Qiong declined each time the mother offered extra payment.

Their happiness was rewarding enough for me. After dropping them off at the airport, the mother texted me 10 minutes later to say that they left a bag in my car. I panicked, opened it – and found a thank-you letter and 1,000 yuan in cash. I was moved to tears!

Guided by a Sense of Purpose

That same sense of purpose guides her off the clock too. Be it helping elderly passengers or volunteering in her community, Wu Qiong carries a conviction that every good deed counts.

每日一善,好运不断! 帮助他人,快乐自己!
A good deed a day brings good luck. Helping others brings joy to yourself.

For Wu Qiong, growth comes from every interaction she has with others – on the road, with her peers, and in her community. “If we put our heart into our work, people will feel it,” she says. “That’s how we make mobility better for everyone.”
